February Update – Jim Kopchok, Chapter Director

Slowly but surely the calendar is moving ahead to that glorious time when we can enjoy re-mounting our bikes! May not seem like it with some recent cold and snow but the signs are there! First, there was a bike show at Pheasant Run a week ago to start energizing the process. Our Chapter Medic First Aid training is scheduled this month, and the International Bike Show is coming up in Rosemont during February. Seeing all those bikes, bling and bikers starts the adrenalin pumping and the blood moving.

Thanks to all who made it to our Post Holiday dinner at Chuck’s Southern Comforts in Darien this past month. Everyone had a great time. Thanks Doug Koglin and Katie McHugh for making the arrangements. We had a turnout of over 30 people. Just shows you what motivates this group in the winter! J

As part of the festivities, John and Katie McHugh decided to introduce and new “travelling” token of authority for our Chapter and Chapter Director. For anyone who may have missed it, I will have it at the next Chapter meeting. Let’s just say it’s a real fashion statement!

This past month we were represented at the District Winter Warm-up by Earl and Pat Hobbs. Thanks Earl and we look forward to hearing more at the meeting. The District Summer Rally is in July and it would be great to have more Chapter participation. Make new friends, but keep the old…..

And speaking of keeping friends together, did you see the group picture from a recent Wednesday Breakfast gathering? I posted on our web site and on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ilz2wings). John Meyers and the gang look like they have a great time. Thanks, Ron Walldren, for sending along the picture. Don’t forget this important part of our Chapter life!

Medic First Aid Training is scheduled for February 21. At the moment all seats are filled. But please indicate if you are interested so that we can allow for any last minute cancellations or consider if we need another presentation of the class. The sign up book will be at our Chapter meeting, or just email if you can’t make it to the meeting.

And then on February 22nd we have our annual dinner at Al’s Steak House. I haven’t been there before but I hear nothing but great things. If you missed the opportunity to share Valentine’s Day with your significant other, now would be a good time to pretend this is what you had in mind all along. And what better way than a group hug from our entire group?

Start planning for our March training sessions and Pot Luck on March 14th. Sessions will include Group Riding, Riding for Mature Riders (we are talking age maturity here), and nighttime riding. Earl, will pick the sessions he thinks have the most appeal. Training starts at 1pm followed by our dinner at about 4pm. I’ve seen lots of great recipes being shared among the group and can’t wait to try everything out!

Honda sponsors the Ride for Kids each summer that supports the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. They are changing up their ride format this year and I’m working on getting someone to present how we might participate. Unfortunately, it looks like the ride itself conflicts with our currently scheduled Covered Bridges ride. However, riders not going to Indiana might be interested in representing our Chapter.

We have a new sponsor starting this month too! Fox Valley Cycles is a Honda dealer located in Aurora and has already donated some significant gifts for us to raffle off. In addition, they expect to have smaller items for us each month. They have also made available an area for us to deliver training and will provide coffee/donuts for our sessions. FVC will use some marketing items we provide to help us in our recruitment efforts. That’s a big deal for us as we look to expand our membership. On April 11, they will host a seminar on Safety and Apparel. More details to follow. Fox Valley Cycles also hosts some rides that we can participate in, which will be great to thank them for their participation.

We have moved the Ride Captain training to May 30. May 16th is Niehaus Customer Appreciation Days and a great day or weekend for a ride. We will work out details on a group ride for those interested. We already have some members expressing interest, which is why we moved the dates around. We are here to serve our members!

And finally, have you mentioned our great group to any of your other riding friends? Bring them along to join in the fun!

Ride Safe!

Jim & Barb Kopchok
