Only a Few More Months – Dennis Murphy, Chapter Educator

We are having a mild winter and I for one love it. There are only a few winter months left. Now is the time you should take time and start inspecting all of your equipment. Now is a good time because you do not have to be in a hurry. And the motorcycle show is coming to town. You always can find some good bargains. If you do not want to start with the bike, you can stay in a warm house and go through your riding gear. By the way your gear is just as important as a good running bike. I am not here to tell you what to wear but think about the protection these pieces offer you. Start with your jacket and pants, they should cover your arm and legs completely. They should fit snuggly enough to keep from flapping in the wind, yet loosely enough to move freely. And we all know how much our weight has changed over time. Leather overs the most protection. A good sturdy synthetic material also provides a lot of protection. Wear a jacket even in warm weather to prevent dehydration. There are many jackets that are designed to protect without getting your overheated even in the summer time.

Let us take a good look at our shoes or boots. I myself prefer boots. If you choose boots they should be high and sturdy enough to cover your ankles and give them support. Soles should be made of hard, durable, slip-resistant material Keep heals short so they don’t catch on rough surfaces

Gloves allow a better grip and help protect your hands in a crash. Your gloves should be made of leather or similar durable material.

Just remember these are protective gear not optional gear. The gear you wear protects you. Do not go for a ride without them and do not buy cheaply made equipment.

Ride safe.
